Transforming Operational Workflows: UX for Labor, Flow, and Role Management Tools

Designing for Amazon’s large-scale operations in EU sort centers required creating tools that address diverse workflows, improve productivity, and ensure compliance with regional labor and safety standards. I led UX design initiatives for three critical internal platforms—Labor Management Tool, Flow Management Dashboard, and Role Assignment System—to streamline operational workflows and enhance user efficiency.

Labor Management Tool

This platform replaced scattered Excel-based labor planning with a centralized, web-based system. Leveraging feedback from the first version, I collaborated with stakeholders to redesign the interface for faster performance and added features like shift templates, non-productive hour tracking, and automated absence management.

To achieve these improvements, I conducted detailed user interviews and usability tests to uncover friction points in the original system. Insights from these sessions informed the design of interactive planning views that provided clear visual summaries of shift data. I also partnered closely with the engineering team to align design features with technical constraints, ensuring smooth integration and scalability. My approach focused on empowering users with an intuitive interface that reduced the complexity of labor planning, saving significant time and effort for managers.

Flow Management Dashboard

Designed for inbound volume tracking and prioritization, this dashboard provides real-time truck-level visibility and risk tracking. The intuitive interface enables shift managers to identify and act on bottlenecks, improving decision-making during high-pressure situations.

For this tool, I worked with cross-functional teams, including BI engineers and logistics experts, to map out key user workflows. By using data visualization techniques, I created a dashboard that translated complex metrics into actionable insights. I also introduced priority tagging for high-risk scenarios, allowing managers to focus on the most critical tasks first. Regular design reviews and iterations based on feedback ensured that the tool met the fast-paced demands of sort center operations.

Role Assignment System

This system automates assigning associates to roles based on certifications and headcount data, improving pre-shift efficiency. By designing intuitive EU-specific features like visual role displays and advanced compliance tracking, I addressed challenges such as regional labor laws and varying data sources.

To design this tool, I collaborated with regional stakeholders to understand the nuances of EU labor policies. Using this input, I built a modular system that accommodated diverse requirements while maintaining consistency in role assignments. I worked closely with developers to create a streamlined interface for both manual overrides and automated scheduling. Prototypes were tested with pilot sites, leading to a design that reduced pre-shift delays and improved associate satisfaction.

These projects demonstrate my ability to craft scalable, user-centered designs for high-complexity environments. From incorporating global feedback to balancing local compliance needs, I delivered solutions that supported Amazon’s operational goals while maintaining a focus on usability. While specifics about these tools cannot be fully disclosed, I’d be happy to share my approach, challenges, and learnings during a discussion. Feel free to reach out via my contact form or email.
